In the result of medical dysfunction or chronic illness, your first thought may be to run to your primary care physician. While it is good to get things checked out by your doctor, there are some different paths of care that you can receive than standard forms of medication.
Acupuncture & Accupressure
While intimidating to some, acupuncture is the act of stimulating specific points of the body. While most people think of needles with the activity, it is not to the only form of the body therapy. Acupressure is done in a similar fashion, but only with adding pressure to these body points instead of puncturing the skin.
Those who practice these activities use their hands, elbows or even their feet to apply pressure or puncture the skin at particular points in the body. These meridians, or channels, are thought to carry ch’i, or life energy, through one’s body.
When these points are blocked or out of balance, applying pressure to these points allows energy to flow freely again. Another form of acupuncture besides needles involves electrical pressure. It’s been thought to help with depression, chronic pain, and even nausea.
Chiropractic
A more widely accepted form of alternative medical therapy, this procedure focuses on the musculoskeletal system. Any pain in the neck, back, limbs, or joints are handled by spinal adjustments. By manipulating the spine with a controlled force, they become hypermobile. When bones become free from restriction, they get stiff. These adjustments are to help restore lost mobility.
Aromatherapy
The use of essential oils in different ways to promote physical healing. Oils can be massaged into the skin, inhaled, or even in some cases consumed. Each oil has a unique property that is used to treat different types of inflammation or infection. Others have been known to help with the reduction of anxiety, pain, and even ease symptoms of depression.
Reflexology
Another type of alternative treatment that involves applying pressure, reflexology focuses specifically on the hands, feet, and ears. There’s a theory with reflexology that different points on these items have an influence on other parts of your body. A large variety of people use this treatment for diabetes relief, cancer relief, and even asthma! Reflexology can be done by yourself, or you can have an appointment at almost any spa that offers massages.
